Small batch ceramics in Canterbury

Between her duties as a mum-of-two, you will find Tegan at the throwing wheel creating with clay.

Hello, who are you?

Hi I’m Tegan, I live in Lincoln, Canterbury with my husband and two kids.

How did you find your passion for ceramics?

When I was at art school! My parents owned a ceramics factory called Studio Ceramics so I was able to work and play there along side my study. One of my favourite roles was running the paint-your-own ceramics classes with kids!

What inspires your designs?

Lots of older pottery forms from the likes of Crown Lynn’s urn vases and Ancient Greek potty forms. I also love drawing inspo from my kids’ scribbles and doodles.

Where does all the making happen?

In my garage studio when and if my kids sleep! I’m also a member of a local pottery group so I’ll head there if I need peace.

What is your favourite thing about working with clay?

It’s all hands on. No time to pick up my phone and get sucked into a never-ending scroll! I also love how versatile it is. Quite often I’ll think of something I need around the home and figure out a way to make it from clay. Recently I’ve made hooks and a wee shelf for my skincare.

What is it like being a ceramicist in New Zealand?

Great! So much talent. It’s cool to see all the emerging potters popping up.

Canterbury, New Zealand
