Hello, who are you?

Hi there! I'm Charlie from Savingforces based in the south of England.

Tell me about your creative journey, when did you start clay making?

My journey has been lifelong and I've always enjoyed putting my skills/confidence to the test in exploring new arts. I first started working with clay in 2017, making cute small sculptures but then my style and interest evolved into earrings during 2020 to fill my new-found time at home. From this time period, I discovered so many talented artists who encouraged me to experiment with larger and more detailed projects, which I'm loving doing! What do you enjoy most about working with clay?

With the type of clay I use, the sculpture isn't permanent until it's baked so there's freedom to put down a project for hours, days, months even, and come back to it when your skills have improved. In addition to this, I could be working on a sculpture then go to look up at the time and five hours have passed. Sculpting is very therapeutic.

You create an interesting assortment of sculptures! Is there an influence behind these?

I'm a fan of the horror genre and adore every animal and I'm sure this shows in my work. I'm enjoying the early stages of sculpting right now where I'm taking on projects of any difficulty to expand my skills and it's satisfying to see the improvements.

What puts you in the mood to create?

Anything! If I'm watching a film or series and something catches my eye, I'll do some research of the object and make it or incorporate the style into my work. It's also quite easy for me to find inspiration in nature or even simply studying a face. As soon as an idea has formed, I find it hard to ignore and have to start sculpting right away.
