5 makers creating delicious ‘food art’

Just like flowers and the creatives capturing florals in art, food has been the subject of many artworks across history – whether it’s Campbell's Soup Cans by Andy Warhol, Still Life with Cheese by Floris Claesz. van Dijck, or Vincent van Gogh’s Still Life with Apples. It’s not just paintings, either. Today, artists are taking food items – from the humble eggs on toast to decadent brunches and local cuisine – and creatively replicating their 3D forms with both the paintbrush, and other mediums such as clay and beads.

Let’s take a look at some of our favourites!

Carly Owens Weiss

It’s easy find yourself happily scrolling, scrolling and scrolling Carly’s Instagram page. One post will be a double yolked egg ‘spilling’ out of a shell, and the next will be a sad face depicted by two egg yolks and a piece of bacon. Of course, these aren’t actual eggs or greasy bacon strips – they’re soft sculptures hand embroidered by Carly, featuring intricate beadwork. Check it out for yourself!

Cat Gerke

A long-time favourite at The Maker’s Story is the work of Australian artist Cat Gerke. Featured in our Issue Three magazine, Cat worked for many years in the interiors industry, and when she became an artist she made it her mission for quality artworks to be accessible for all. “My partner is a chef and most of our lives are spent talking about, eating or sharing food. The idea of incorporating this into my painting wasn’t actually something I thought about too much, it was just a given. I am so inspired by food – it’s beautiful and has the power to conjure up feelings and memories when used in art,” says Cat.

Alina Hayes

From oysters to fresh fruit, food makes a regular appearance on Alina Hayes’ canvases. Based in Australia, the artist aims to “depict the essence of Australian flora and everyday objects, inviting viewers to explore the intricate details and hidden stories within these subjects”. The realistic still life paintings will certainly make you wish there was a beautiful plate of Australian-grown produce on your table – yum!

Jessie Feitosa

Fresh and vibrant, Jessie Feitosa’s original paintings would make anyone excited for summer – her canvases feature everything from bright citrus fruits and colourful cocktails, to fresh seafood. It’s like we could just reach into the painting and grab an iced Aperol or slice of orange.

Tegan Makes

Another artist bringing our favourite foods to life through art is ceramic artist Tegan. Making small batch ceramics in Canterbury, New Zealand, Tegan also makes jewellery designs and plenty of functional ceramic pieces – frequently featuring food and florals – such as mugs and bowls.
